Ampex ATR-124 2" 24 Track Tape Machine

First, a note from SV….TAPE IS NOT DEAD!!! Tape will continue to be manufactured and available regardless of the recent scares. And dumping tape onto digital systems will still be the BEST sound for many more years. Viva la Analog! Now for the description…

The Ampex ATR-124 is generally regarded as the finest tape machine ever built. I know everyone says that but this time it’s true! Ampex only produced 65 of these (we have 2) in the neighborhood of $300,000. Purchased in approx 1985. That’s when $300k was worth more like $500k!!! (actually about $535k, I checked with an inflation calculator:). You can own them for a tiny fraction of that amount.

This machine is in great condition, with some scuffs and scratches on the metal side plates. It’s really been cared for. Luckily there is still support for most of the parts. Both original parts/service/operation manuals are included with all schematics. Also included is the optional Auto Bias card which automatically sets biasing of the record head for all 24 channels.

The Ampex ATR-124 is a robust legendary 2” multi-track open reel deck offering three speeds of 7.5, 15 and 30 ips with a pitch control range of -50% and +200%, accommodates reel sizes from 5 inches to 16 inches, and can be configured in 8-track, 16-track and 24-track configurations. Microprocessor control featuring 100 cue points, set-up, recall and rehearse functions. 24 tracks, transformerless inputs and outputs. 24 tracks operate at 7.5, 15, and 30 ips. Accepts 5-16 inch reels.
