Moog Minimoog Analog Synth Synthesizer w/ MIDI MOD
I’m not sure what year this unit was made but the serial # is 8640. The midi mod was installed about 15 years ago so it has proven itself stable. Included is the Roland MPU-101 CV to MIDI converter needed to run the Minimoog via midi.
We just put $400 into this unit at one of the best vintage keyboard shops in NYC. Which also means that it has a warranty up until 8/17/06. It was entirely brought up to spec on the inside. The key contacts were cleaned. The buss bar was refurbed entirely. 2 pots were replaced with identical replacements. The keyboard was adjusted for smooth action and it has been completely calibrated. The playability and internal condition is excellent.
As for the outside, it’s not as bad as it looks. As you can see in the pics, one side has foam from a case melded onto it from years of sitting in the case. It can definitely be cleaned but we were too lazy. We can do it, but you can save yourself a few bucks by doing it yourself. The markings you see on the control panel are all grease pencil and can be removed. If you’re really a stickler, you can replace the oxidized/rusted screws and jacks with any hardware store parts within an hour or two and really make it look like new. Otherwise, there might be a minor mark here and there but nothing out of the ordinary. Most important, is that we made sure that whoever buys this instrument has an extremely trust worthy, dependable Minimoog.
More information regarding the MIDI mod:
The mod doesn't actually allow it to accept a 5 pin midi jack like a new plug n play digital keyboard might. This analog beast isn't controlled digitally, it's controlled entirely by analog signals by varying voltages. The mod basically allows you to insert voltage signals into different parts of the keyboard. This would be no good to anyone unless you have a MIDI to CV (Control Voltage) converter, of which a unit of the highest quality, the Roland MPU-101 is INCLUDED. This unit connects via five 1/8" cables to the minimoog and sends the various control voltages to the synth based on the midi information you give it. The cables are not included but you can find them in literally any electronics store for a couple of bucks.
A more detailed look:
There are a couple of very important options to this mod which other mods do not include and which would make this one less than perfect. Luckily, the additions were included and the mod IS perfect.
There is the standard keyboard disable switch which you can see in the pics and must be disengaged in order for the midi control to work. Then there are two very important knobs. One allows variable modulation/filter depth. The second allows for keyboard scaling. This basically allows you to tune the exact voltage so that it exactly matches the keyboard control section in this particular instrument. Because each on of these units had very slightly different voltages, they have to be tuned and calibrated (this one is perfectly tuned and calibrated). So standard voltages from the MIDI -> CV converter would sound slightly out of tune if it were not for this option.
The Jacks you see in the pics are External CV inputs -
CV is for pitch info DYN is for vcs contrl BND is for bend cv MOD is for modulation cv GTE adapts the minimoog for standard gate voltage to work properly with the midi info you send from your sequencer/controller
In a nutshell, the MIDI -> CV converter splits the midi signal into 5 different types of information then converts it into various analog signal voltages and feeds it to 5 different sections of the synth.
This is one of the few Minimoogs with complete MIDI control that you will ever see for sale. Don't let it pass you by because it might be years before you see another one!
